Is It Possible To Do 1100 Burpees In Under 2 Hours?

Alright! Now that I have your attention, check this out.

My name is Ryan Garcia and I am the owner of Wild Horizons CrossFit in Fort Collins, Colorado.

I am also a volunteer for The Friends of Retired Greyhounds (FORG) located in Denver, Colorado. They work very hard to help find homes for retired Greyhounds that are more often than not coming fresh off a race track.

The work they do is incredible, and I am inspired by their efforts to make a difference for these dogs, as well as the humans who foster/adopt them.

My girlfriend, Jenna, and I have adopted 2 from them since I started volunteering.

(Technically we failed as fosters, because the original plan wasn’t to keep them)

I have helped FORG before with a flash fundraiser to help raise money for a greyhound I fostered who suffers from progressive retina atrophy, and will need eye care for the rest of his life.

While donations are always appreciated no matter the circumstance, the current situation at FORG is very significant.

Here is some history:

In Spain there is a breed of Greyhounds called “Galgos”.

“Galgos are an ancient breed of hunting dog once raised exclusively by Spanish nobles. Today they must be one of the most abused dogs on the planet. Tens of thousands are killed in Spain every year, often in gruesome ways. Some are abandoned.

-National Geographic

There is an over breeding problem of Galgos in Spain as they are mass bred in hopes to find dogs who can race at top speeds for racing and hunting. Once they are finished being used for hunting or racing, they are often killed, or abandoned in poor condition.

“Galgos have been thrown down wells, cast into rivers to drown, burned to death, and doused with acid. Some are left in forests, their legs intentionally broken so they can’t find their way home…And then there are the hangings. Dogs who have performed well in competition but are no longer in top form may be hanged high from a tree—a relatively quick death. Those who have embarrassed their galgueros by racing poorly may also be hanged, but low to the ground so their paws barely touch. Their desperate scrabbling for footing as they slowly choke to death is called “piano playing,” – National Geographic

There is a dog shelter in Spain called Scooby Medina, and they have tried to work with hunters to have them surrender their dogs to the shelter instead of killing or abandoning them. At any given time, Scooby can have 400-600 dogs in their shelter.

This past week, representatives of Friends of Retired Greyhounds, The Daphne Legacy Tour, and American Greyhound Adoption, traveled to the Scooby rescue in Spain with the intent to bring 24 Galgos back to the states.

As of yesterday, all 24 arrived safely in Chicago.

11 of the Galgos are going to Indiana

2 are going to California

And the remaining 11 are coming to Denver, Colorado under FORG.

The costs of flying the dogs across the ocean was taken care of, but the cost to transport them from Chicago to Colorado is $130 per greyhound. Last I heard that cost was mostly taken care of, but once they arrive, they will be placed in foster homes, and foster-to-adpot homes. They all need medical attention, and the funding for that is extremely limited.

So what better time than now to bring attention to this noble cause FORG has embarked on, and help raise awareness, and raise funds by putting myself through a bit of suffering?!

This evening, Friday at 8pm Mountain Time, I will be completing 1100 burpees for time (I am doing 100 burpees for each Galgo coming to Colorado).

Because misery loves company, my brotha from anotha, Bruce Hilty, is driving down from Wyoming to do this with me. You can follow him on the gram @brucehilty

I will have a live stream going, and the donation links posted on my gym’s Facebook and Instagram pages: wildhorizonscrossfit

For every dollar raised during the time it takes me to do the burpees, I will complete 1 calorie on the airdyne bike as well when the number is totaled.

ALL DONATIONS MUST BE MADE DIRECTLY TO FORG.

WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR DONATION, PLEASE PUT MY NAME (RYAN GARCIA) OR SOMETHING ABOUT BURPEES IN THE SUBJECT LINE SO FORG KNOWS IT CAME FROM THIS FUNDRAISER.
