Let’s start with a very brief history lesson.
The world was divided into regions, and Select CrossFit gyms from each region could host Regional events in which ANYONE could SIGN UP to participate in.
The top qualifying athletes in each region would meet at the CrossFit Games.
The “sport” of CrossFit was very small, and there was no strict barrier of entry or qualification for the Regional events.
A pre event called “Sectionals” was added before Regionals. Sectionals was meant to narrow the field on a local level so Regionals could be more competitive.
Regionals still led to the games, but there was a lot of controversy because certain regions were hosting sectional and regional workouts that were very different than others. Some felt form region to region there were easier or more difficult tests of fitness in order to make it to the CrossFit Games.
The CrossFit Open was born!
6 Weeks of online competition was announced, and every week a new workout was released online.
There was no judge’s course this first year, and there was no formal open announcement.
The Open created standard workouts that anyone could sign up for and complete at a local affiliate.
The Open led to Regionals, where again, the workouts were standard, and the top athletes made it to the CrossFit Games.
The CrossFit Open booms!
Numbers increase, judging standards improve, video requirements are born, affiliate scores, individual scores, scaling options, and new movements all become a trend.
Elaborate Open Show announcements by Game’s Director Dave Castro are highly anticipated.
The Open Show consists of top athletes in the sport going head to head.
The Open leads to elaborate Regional events, and as usual, Regionals leads to the CrossFit Games.
This year things got shook.
CrossFit HQ changed the format of their competition season. Cutting personnel and eliminating social media presence was among some of the moves made by the bossman himself.
The CrossFit Open is still regarded as the FIRST step in qualifying for the CrossFit Games, but they did away with exclusive Open coverage, and essentially out sourced the possibility for other gyms to host Open Announcements, and stream their own coverage of a reveal.
Along with taking away the elaborate Open announcement production, in an effort to cut costs, HQ did away with the Regional level of competition, and in its place adapted sanctionals.
The CrossFit Open is still the first stage in qualifying, but the Sanctional events also offer opportunities for athletes who DIDN’T make the cut in the Open to pursue podium spots that will get them invited to the CrossFit Games.
Essentially, with these sanctional events CrossFit is willing to represent bigger competitions around the world (that they were never willing to put their brand on before) as a way to give more people opportunities to qualify for the CrossFit Games.
Normally, the CrossFit Open runs from the end of February to early April, but instead of waiting a FULL year to put this new format into effect, they decided to make all of those changes this year, and moved the Open to October, where it will continue to happen from here on out.
We already did the 2019 CrossFit Open earlier this year, but NOW we are starting the 2020 season.
The 2020 CrossFit Open will run from Oct 10-Nov 11th.
Shortly after the end of the CrossFit Open, sanctional season begins, and athletes will have the rest of this year (2019) and well into 2020 to compete at several big name, outsourced, CrossFit supported events around the world.
Sanctional events will take place all the way up until the CrossFit Games which will most likely happen in late July or early August of 2020.
Once the CrossFit Games are over, there will be a short break from August – October, then the 2021 CrossFit Open will begin, and the cycle continues!
I know it is a hard sell doing TWO CrossFit Open events in one year, but I understand why it had to be done this way.
Essentially, the “Sport” side of CrossFit is continuously evolving as far as how athletes are selected and can advance. The CrossFit Open is, and has always been billed as something that is meant to foster community, and self improvement through fitness. Being a part of something much bigger than yourself, and using the CrossFit Open as a measuring stick to help set goals going into the “off season”.
As usual, the Open Workouts will be announced every Thursday night for the next 5 weeks, and athletes will have from Thursday night when the workout is announced until Monday night at 6pm Mountain Time to complete the workout and submit a score IF THEY HAVE REGISTERED.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO!
The cost to OFFICIALLY sign up for the CrossFit Open is $20 and is paid through a custom profile athletes create on the CrossFit Games website.
This simply allows you to post your score on the worldwide leaderboard, and allows for your results to remain in their database for years to come.
Again, this is NOT a requirement.
While there will be many opportunities to do the workout, and I will make myself available the best I can, officially, Saturday mornings from 9am-11am will be the designated class time that we do the Open workouts for the next 5 weeks.
As always, there are infinite amounts of ways to scale and modify these workouts, and I highly encourage anyone and everyone to participate whether or not you decide to pay the $20 to be official.
In past years I have put up a spreadsheet in which athletes can sign up for specific time slots to come on Saturday and do the Open workout. This is mainly to prevent large groups of people standing around waiting to do the workout. However, it is nice to have a crowd of people watching and supporting during the workout, and it is nice to have people who can help judge and count reps! If you took the judge’s course already, you do not have to do it again this year!
